What happens to my data on Bravely's mobile app? Our rules for data privacy

By Rackley Nolan
COO of Bravely
As a user of Bravely, we don’t watch what you do on the app, and we don’t share any of your information with anyone.
Just like you, we also care about how our personal is used. When you sign up to Bravely, we want you to know that we take great care with that information you share with us.
We want to be open and honest about how we are using your information, from the start.
As our lives increasingly move to online services, public awareness for personal privacy is growing. We want Bravely to be a tool that has a positive impact on you and your mental health, it’s a duty of care that doesn’t stop when it comes to your data.
Since the beginning of Bravely, user privacy and security of information has been incredibly important, in every conversation we have had. As we developed Bravely, we talked with and surveyed hundreds of people, most have indicated that they are uncomfortable talking about their mental health.
With many of our users struggling with the idea of simply talking to someone they know about their mental health, the idea of that kind of information being exposed is a nightmare to us.
So, to all those people signing up for Bravely, those who are curious or concerned, we want you to know these steps we are taking to keep your information secret.
1. We don’t sell your data.
Some of the biggest companies in tech make their money by selling your data for ads or for others to use. We don’t do that.
With mental health being such a sensitive topic, we want you to know that your data is not getting sold or shared to any third party.
2. We don’t collect more than we have to about you
This is a basic step in securing your information — it can’t be leaked if you don’t have it!
Unlike the big tech companies who attempt to profile and quantify you with keywords and data points (1, 2), we don’t accumulate a continuous stream of information on you.
We don’t sell it, so there is no need to have more than we need. Your first name is used for our emails, and stored separately in our email list.
There is no passive data collection about you on Bravely.
3. We separate your information
When your data is stored in our database, we compartmentalise it to prevent leaking your mental health challenges and personal information together.
There is two types of information that we store: your personal information such as name, or email; and then your preferences for content you view or resonate with on our app.
The two sets of data are linked with a unique identifying code, so your mental health information is only retrieved once you have signed into your device.
4. Your account data is encrypted when it is stored
For the storage and protection of our data, Bravely relies on Firebase to provide a secure database, built by Google, with industry leading data security and safety.
Your app usage, the cards you save are encrypted and not viewable by us.
Your answers to climate are stored locally on your phone, and can't be accessed by us. Your profile photo (if you set one) is saved locally as well.
We have released this article with the goal of keeping our usage of data as open as possible. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact us.
